  • How to Find Your Deepest Story: A Guided Meditation – Upgrade your connection to the quiet voice inside your head that guides your most important decisions.

  • The Feelings and Needs Exercise – Six questions that will map out your entire essay. Simply put, the most efficient brainstorming exercise I've ever created.

  • The Great College Essay Test – I feel there are four qualities every great essay should possess. How does your essay stack up?

THE RIGOR.

YOU’LL GET ANSWERS TO ALL THESE QUESTIONS:

How do I figure out what to write about?
How do I structure my essay?
Is there a step-by-step process for writing it?
Are any topics off-limits?
How much sharing is too much?
How do I revise my essay?
How do I make it not-boring?
What are some different ways I can start my story?
How do I show the reader I’m really smart?
How do I brag in a way that doesn’t sound like I’m bragging?
How do I make my essay, like, deep?
What are the four qualities of an amazing essay?
How do I end my essay?
How do I know whether my essay is good or not?
Should I share my essay? With how many people? When?

THE TOOLS.

Drawing on my time spent studying screenwriting structure, I’ll teach you how to tell a great story—in your own words.

THE FEEDBACK.

Each lesson is followed by a LIVE Q&A with me (Ethan), where you can ask questions particular to your essay.

THE SUPPORT.

You’ll be paired with a writing partner (another student in the course) who will give you personalized feedback on your essay that’s kind, useful and actionable. And I’ll teach you how to do that.

THE GET ‘ER DONE-NESS.

Because we’ll be working over three days you’ll actually finish your Common App.

THE ACCESS.

Watch and work from anywhere. Can't make the live sessions? Sign up anyway. You’ll receive a recording each night with what you missed. Plus, you’ll have access to the recordings forever.

THE RELIEF.

Like many, I had no clue where or how to start my personal statement. It was incredible when Ethan helped me uncover ideas and truths within my life that I didn’t see for myself; he truly showed me how my life is like a beautiful movie. From then on, the essay wrote itself. The webinar series was a very intimate and engaging experience that helped me effectively express MY story.
— Daishi T. / Harvard University, Class of 2018
For the first time in my 8 years of college counseling, I feel like I am beginning to get a handle on how to assist my students with the essay writing process. This has been a weakness of mine and I am extremely grateful to be given tools that I can both relate to and apply with my students. I will listen to Ethan present every time I am given the opportunity—he is that good!!!
— Valerie J. / Counselor, Oaks Christian School
I never knew you could learn so much from a webinar. Before this, I had no clue what I was doing for my personal statement. After this, I’ve learned so many strategies, outlines, and tips to help me. In fact, I’ve come to appreciate this process. Ethan has helped me see this as a therapeutic process of analyzing my journey through high school and life.
— Athena O. / University of Texas, Austin, Class of 2021
Where can I start? I’d been trying to get down something, at least some scrap of an answer to the essay prompts for 3-4 months, but I hadn’t gotten anything down. By the end of your course I not only had an essay, but one that I was proud of. Something that, if I accidentally sent to an admissions officer months earlier than intended, I wouldn’t be worried.
— Avantika C. / Student
Ethan’s teaching goes beyond just writing just a college personal essay. He presents a process in writing that is structured yet at the same time, liberating. He uses a rich repertoire of strategies and language that offers any writer a way to go from ordinary to stunning. Take his course, do the exercises, do the homework, and open your mind to a new way of looking at personal storytelling.

Hi. I'm Ethan Sawyer, the College Essay Guy, and my goal is to make counselors' lives easier, relieve parents' worry, and help students write amazing college essays.

How do I do this? By creating a space that invites genuine curiosity, vulnerability and courage.

My workshops demystify the essay-writing process and two comments I often get afterwards are "I didn't know I could write it that way" and "I'm ready to go home and write an essay right now!" (Parents and counselors have made this last comment too.)

But more than anything I love to help students make extraordinary discoveries, sparking realizations that will serve them not only in their writing, but in their lives.
