Have a large student caseload but a small (or non-existent) budget?

We want to help.

Counselor Match connects high Schools, CBOs, and non-profit organizations with experienced counselors to offer college application workshops and assistance.

Launched in 2019, Counselor Match harnesses the power of the counselor community to increase equity in the college admissions process. This common goal provides a bridge, connecting counselors who need help with other counselors who are able to give it. . We’re all working toward the same outcomes;let’s do it together!

Examples of what we offer:

  • College Essay Workshop

  • Financial Aid Workshop

  • College Night Speaker

  • Workshop on the Common Application

  • Workshop on A Specific Regional Application (UC, Cal State, UT, etc.)

  • Mock Admissions Interviews

We also offer:

  • Online College Essay Writing Workshop from An Out-of-Area Counselor

  • Online College List Development Workshop from An Out-of-Area Counselor

  • College List Development Workshop

  • Multi-Day Workshops

For free?

Yup.

What’s the catch?

No catch.

Schools qualify if:

  • They qualify as Title 1, have a high percentage of students on the free and reduced lunch program, or don’t have the budget for college development.

  • Although we prioritize those mentioned above, any other school can apply!

Organizations, CBOs, and Non-profits qualify if they serve under-resourced populations of high school age students.

Heads-up: We are NOT trying to saddle you with a well-intentioned intern that you have to manage and who ends up being more trouble than they’re worth. Our counselors are bonafied, and most have 5+ years experience.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did I (Ethan)  start this program?

Because I believe in increasing college access and equity. And because ten years ago I partnered with a counselor at a charter school to offer free college essay workshops. Their counselor focused on list development and I focused on essays. The result in our first year was the school’s first POSSE winner. The next year we had two more, plus a Gates Millenium Scholarship Winner, also the school’s first, and a huge range of acceptances. Our partnership flourished, and the partnership was a huge success. We believe this model can work globally.

Who conducts the workshops and activities in these schools and organizations?

An experienced cohort of counselors. You can learn more about which counselors are available in your area by contacting Matchlighters Director, Erika Coplon, at [email protected] .

How much does it cost?

Our program is free.

What qualifies a school or organization for the program?

Schools qualify if:

  • They qualify as Title 1, have a high percentage of students on the free and reduced lunch program, or don’t have the budget for college development.

  • Although we prioritize those mentioned above, any other school can apply!

Organizations, CBOs, and Non-profits qualify if they serve under-resourced populations of high school age students.

I’m concerned my counselor match may overstep their bounds. Can I request that they not advertise themselves to my students?

Of course. All our counselors have signed a form saying they won’t promote anything (except having a balanced school list)  and we request that volunteer counselors follow the school/organization counselor’s lead.

How long after I submit my interest form will I be paired with a counselor?

This depends on how many counselors we have available in your location. It could take up to a month to receive a match. If you’re willing to set up an online workshop/webinar with your counselor and your students, that can happen much sooner

What resources will be available to me and my students?

Like your counselor match, you will have access to Ethan’s entire suite of college application resources. Your students will also receive access to Ethan’s courses.
