What UC Personal Insight Questions are
350 words sounds short — until you start writing.
The UC application is unique: 8 prompts, but only 4 chances to tell your story. We provide the one-on-one coaching students need to navigate these 350-word ‘mini-essays’ with confidence, turning a stressful requirement into a powerful narrative that shows UC admissions readers who you are beyond your GPA.
As Seen In
The UC Personal Insight Questions aren't your average college essays
There's a reason the UC schools specifically don't call them essays. Many students miss the opportunities to answer them well
A unique format
The Common App is one main essay. The UC system requires four separate questions — read together as a set, not one at a time.
Read against 13 criteria
UC reviewers evaluate every applicant against 13 factors of comprehensive review. Strong PIQs fill the gaps your transcript can't show.
4 of 8 prompts: pick strategically
You'll answer four. You'll skip four. The combination you pick is the first strategic decision to allow you to tell your full story
350 words. Half the runway.
How do you tell your story in 350 words? With no room for prose, short, straightforward responses are vital.
Expanded activities list
UCs give you up to 20 entries across activities, awards, work, and volunteering — double the Common App. How do you best use them?
UC-specific sections
UC's Academic History and Additional Comments box are where context goes. Explain a hard semester, academic interest expanded, a gap accounted for. Most applicants leave them blank.

“Working with CEG taught me how to write my essays creatively using methods I would’ve never thought of on my own. The process helped me learn how my everyday experiences and activities have shaped who I am and my values.”
— Kaina
Pre-Work & Discovery
Before your first call, you'll complete 1–2 hours of brainstorming exercises plus a first pass at your Common Experiences List. This gives your coach real material to work with from minute one.
Prompt Selection Strategy
Your coach reviews your pre-work and helps you map your story across all 8 prompts. Together, you identify the 4 that give you the most range to tell your story.
Topic Check with a Second Coach
Before you get too deep, a second experienced coach reviews your 4 chosen topics. They look for overlap, missed angles, and opportunities you might not have seen.
Drafting, Revision & Core Content Review
Most PIQs go through 5–10 drafts. At the midpoint, a third coach runs a Core Content Review — reading all 4 essays together to check for range, content, voice consistency, and missed themes.
Putting it All Together
Before submitting, your coach will work with you to draft your Activities List, Additional Comments & Academic History Section to make sure your full story is told.

FAQ
Common Questions about our UC PIQ Coaching
What are UC Personal Insight Questions?
UC Personal Insight Questions (PIQs) are the essay component of the University of California application. Students choose 4 of 8 prompts and write a response to each, with a 350-word maximum per response. They’re how UC admissions officers learn who you are beyond grades and test scores.
How do I choose which 4 PIQ prompts to answer?
Choose the combination that lets you show the most range — different values, experiences, and sides of yourself across all 4 responses. Our coaches walk you through this as the first major step in the process, before you write a single word.
How is UC PIQ coaching different from Common App essay coaching?
When should I start working on my PIQs?
We recommend starting in the summer before senior year — July or August — to give yourself enough time for multiple drafts before the November 30 UC application deadline. Starting in September or October makes it tighter (and more stressful).
Is the UC application deadline November 30?
Yes. The UC application deadline is November 30 for fall admission. All 9 UC campuses share the same deadline, and there are no rolling or early action options.
Do you help with all 8 PIQ prompts or just the 4 I pick?
We start by reviewing all 8 prompts together to identify which 4 are the strongest fit for your story. After that, coaching focuses on drafting and revising the 4 you choose.
What if I only need help with one or two PIQs?
Our process is structured around all 4 PIQs for a reason — the essays need to work together as a set. We don’t offer single-essay PIQ help, but if budget is a concern, ask about our Matchlighters scholarship program on your free consultation.
Do you guarantee UC admissions?
No. No ethical coach can guarantee admission and anyone who claims otherwise is misleading you. What we do guarantee is the strongest possible application if you put in the work: essays that genuinely reflect you, reviewed by multiple expert coaches before you hit submit.
